Helped by a large decline in returns, net sales in the adult hardcover segment rose 12.3% in August at the 17 publishers that supply results to AAP's monthly sales report. Still, adult hardcover sales for the first eight months of the year were down 12.2%. Returns declined in every publishing category in August, a sign that major accounts have driven down inventory to as low a level as possible. In the segment that has no returns, e-books, sales from the 13 publishers that reported sales in August increased 189.1%, to $14.4 million, and year-to-date sales rose 177.3%, to $96.6 million. During August, AAP added seven new audiobook publishers to its report, bringing the total to 21.
