Rubin Named Head of Henry Holt

-- Publishers Weekly, 10/27/2009 8:56:00 AM

It didn’t take long for Stephen Rubin to resurface after his departure ealier this month from Random House. Beginning November 2, Rubin will serve as president and publisher of the Macmillan imprint Henry Holt. Dan Farley, who has led Holt since early 2008, will now focus exclusive on the Macmillan Children's Publishing Group where he has been president and publisher since its inception late last year. The announcements were made by Macmillan CEO John Sargent, to whom both men will report.

In a prepared remarks, Rubin said he planned to publish books "that bridge the gap between commercial and literature. I believe that Holt is the perfect place to do this, given that its sister companies are the distinguished Farrar Straus and the powerhouse St. Martin's Press." Rubin said he was looking forward to "developing a tight, powerful focused list." At Holt, Rubin will have a much smaller business to run than at Random House, where he oversaw Doubleday Broadway before being named publisher at large as part of the restructuring of the Random House imprints.

Farley has been running Holt since early 2008 following the decision by John Sterling to take on other projects within the Macmillan family. Farley installed Marjorie Braman as editor-in-chief shortly thereafter. Late in 2008 he was given the additional responsibilty of heading the new children's group when Macmillan combined its various children's imprints under one person. Last week, Holt picked up two National Book Award nominees, Fordlandia in nonfiction and Charles and Emma in the Young People's Literature category.
