On the Fast Track

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 3/26/2001

Would it surprise you to learn that Americans will spend over $110 billion this year on fast food—more than they'll spend on movies, books, magazines, newspapers, videos and recorded music combined? This is only one of the unsettling statistics to be found in Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the American Meal, which marks its second week on our nonfiction chart. Published by Houghton Mifflin on January 17, Eric Schlosser's study—which PW's starred review noted "establishes a seminal argument for the true wrongs at the core of modern America"—has 91,000 copies in print after five trips to press. Extensive print coverage has ranged from Rolling Stone to Entertainment Weekly, from Talk magazine to the Christian Science Monitor. The author has appeared on NPR's Morning Edition, Fresh Air and The Todd Mundt Show; CBS's Early Show; The O'Reilly Factor on Fox News; and more. In addition, numerous Web sites have featured the book and chats with Schlosser. Upcoming publicity includes interviews on CBS Evening News and ABC World News Weekend.
