Heinze Götze, 88

Herbert R. Lottman -- Publishers Weekly, 3/26/2001

Dr. Heinz Götze, publisher and former managing partner of Springer-Verlag and one of Europe's most distinguished names in scientific books, died in the firm's headquarters city of Heidelberg on March 2. He was 88. In his role as managing partner alongside the Springer family, he played a key role in the postwar reconstruction of the house, overseeing its expansion to become a leading international scientific publisher whose chief language became English. Götze remained a managing partner of Springer until the acquisition of a majority stake in the company by Bertelsmann in 1998, after which he joined the supervisory board.
