Disney Job Cuts To Hit Book Units

Edward Nawotka -- Publishers Weekly, 4/2/2001

The Walt Disney Company announced last week that it will eliminate 4,000 from its worldwide workforce, but the cuts will have only a small impact on its Hyperion and children's book divisions. The mandated 3% cut in staff will be applied equitably across all divisions of the company. Hyperion publisher Bob Miller told PW, "I haven't seen the book business be as affected by economic turns and downturns. We will be reducing some of our 55 staff, but it won't affect our program and the differences will not be noticed." Should a 3% cut be applied to Hyperion, the company would lose one to two staffers at most. Ellen Morgenstern, a spokesperson for the children's group, said, "While we acknowledge that each business unit will likely participate in meeting this goal, we cannot share specific numbers."
