Golden Kites Fly High

Winners of the 2000 Golden Kite Awards, given by the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, were recently announced. One winner and one honor book were chosen in each of four categories. Top prizes went to Kathleen Karr for The Boxer (FSG), for fiction; Ellen Levine for Darkness over Denmark (Holiday House), for nonfiction; Jane Kurtz for River Friendly, River Wild (S&S), for picture-book text; and David Shannon for The Rain Came Down (Scholastic/Blue Sky), for picture-book illustration.

The awards will be presented at SCBWI's annual conference in Los Angeles in August.
