by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 4/30/2001

A memoir by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connorthat describes the history of her cattle-ranching family over three generations, and her early life on her family's Lazy B ranch in Arizona, has been signed at Random House, where executive editor Kate Medinawill be the editor. The book, to be called, after the ranch, Lazy B, will be co-written with the Justice's brother, H. Alan Day, who managed the ranch until it was sold in 1986. Random trade president Ann Godoff, announcing the world rights deal, said the book would be "a unique portrait of a very American way of life"—frugal and self-reliant. According to Medina, the book "is a fascinating look at the unusual background of one of the most powerful women in America and the life lessons she learned from that very rugged life." The book, which was unagented, will be published next April.
