PEN 2001 Literary Awards

PEN American Center has announced the winners of its 2001 literary awards. The awards will be presented May 21 at Lincoln Center in New York City.

The winners are:

Career Achievement ($2,000 each): Gregory Rabassa and Alastair Reid, translators who have contributed to the appreciation of Hispanic literature by English-language readers.

PEN/Roger Klein Award for Book Editing ($1,000): jointly awarded to Gerald Howard, v-p and editorial director, Broadway Books, and Marian Wood, publisher of Marian Wood Books.

Literary Writing on the Visual Arts ($10,000): Leonard Barkan's Unearthing the Past (Yale Univ. Press) and Debora Silverman's Van Gogh and Gaugin (Farrar, Straus & Giroux).

Art of the Essay ($5,000): David Quammen for The Boilerplate Rhino (Scribner).

First Nonfiction ($1,000): Charles Seife for Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea (Viking).

Art of the Memoir ($1,000): C.K. Williams for Misgivings (Farrar, Straus & Giroux).

Translation ($3,000): Tiina Nunnally for her translation of Sigrid Undset's novel Kristin Lavransdatter, Vol. III: The Cross (Penguin Classics).

Poetry in Translation ($3,000): Chana Block and Chana Kronfeld for their joint translation of Open Closed Open by Yehuda Amichai (Harcourt).

Working Writer Fellowship ($5,000): Graham McNamee.

Emerging Poet Award ($5,000): Richard Matthews.
