Getting to #1

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 3/5/2001

Amy Tan's first-week sales for The Bonesetter's Daughter were excellent, enough for a strong #2 but not enough to unseat John Grisham's A Painted House, although the numbers were close. She gets another shot at #1 for next week, but then the competition heats up. March 5 is the one-day laydown date for James Patterson's 1st to Die, the launch title for a new series featuring a female PI. Little, Brown's first printing is 850,000 and NBC has scheduled a two-part miniseries based on the book and produced by Patterson, for May.
