Soldiering On

by Daisy Maryles -- Publishers Weekly, 5/28/2001

"It's a tale worthy of a Hollywood movie," said PW's starred review of Ghost Soldiers: The Forgotten Epic Story of WWII's Most Dramatic Mission by Hampton Sides. This wrenching chronicle—about an extraordinarily daring rescue that took place in the Philippines in 1945—has gone back to press twice, and currently has 185,000 copies in print following its May 15 pub date. Doubleday's publicity campaign kicked off with a USA Today pub-date cover story; other print coverage includes People, the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, New York and the New York Times Style section. Sides appeared on Today last Friday, and on Saturday he was heard on NPR's Weekend Edition. The author's tour, which includes military bases (Ft. Bragg, Ft. Benning, Ft. Myers, etc.) and bookstore signings, wraps on July 18 at a New York City B&N location. The first serial was published in the May Esquire, and film rights have been optioned by Universal.

With reporting by Dick Donahue.
