Story of a Secret Sub

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 6/11/2001

One of the most closely guarded secrets of the Cold War involved the building and operation of the U.S. Navy's smallest nuclear-powered submarine, a one-of-a-kind project so hush-hush that the vessel didn't even have a name. Its story will be told in a book just auctioned to Doug Grad at NAL, in a six-figure world-rights deal, by agent Jane Dystel. In Dark Waters: The NR-1, America's Secret Submarine, authors Lee Vyborny and Don Davis will spill the beans about a boat whose very existence was long denied and which has until now been known only to a handful of scientists and navy insiders. It is an adventure story as well, since the little boat went deeper than any previous sub and was extremely vulnerable.
