Denise Rich Surprise

by John F. Baker -- Publishers Weekly, 7/9/2001

The woman whose divorced husband, Marc Rich, cast a shadow over the closing days of the Clinton presidency by his surprise pardon is doing a book—but not with any of the big New York publishers who were reportedly eager to buy her story. Rather, Denise Rich is planning to publish with a comparatively new D.C.-area house, Capital Books, whose publisher, Kathleen Hughes, has formed a partnership with the songwriter/ philanthropist to market a book and a new song, both called (pardon me) Pardon Me! Rich will donate most of the proceeds to a cancer foundation set up in memory of a daughter who died from the disease. The book, to be written in collaboration with Laura Morton, will describe Denise's lavish lifestyle during her marriage to the billionaire financier, his exile to Switzerland after charges were filed against him, their divorce, and the Clinton pardon, in which Denise was much involved. The deal, for world rights, was arranged through Rich's attorney, Lee Goldberg, and Washington lawyer/agent Ronald Goldfarb. Publication, including an author tour, is planned for next April.
