2010 Newbery and Caldecott Predictions: The Third of FourOctober 10, 2009
If you're anything like me you've been reading the Mock Newbery blog Heavy Medal with bated breath. Ever since bad boy Jonathan Hunt joined, the blog has been a riotous series of hard opinions. From Jonathan's critique of When You Reach Me to Nina's return volley at A Season of Gifts back to Jonathan's take on Calpurnia Tate . . . foof! Exciting! Newbery/Caldecott geeks like myself are interested in seeing what they come to debate next. Certainly it has influenced this next round of crazed out-of-the-blue predictions on my part. Not entirely, but certainly a little . . . Posted by Elizabeth Bird on October 10, 2009 | Comments (13)

In response to: 2010 Newbery and Caldecott Predictions: The Third of Four Monica Edinger commented: No nonfiction for Newbery? Seems to be a very strong year --- Moonshot (would love to see a picture book be recognized), Claudette Colvin (currently reading it and am mightily impressed), Almost Astronauts (haven't read it yet --- need to get my hands on a copy, but respect those who have and are raving about it), and more.

In response to: 2010 Newbery and Caldecott Predictions: The Third of Four Fuse #8 commented: Colvin's got a good shot, that's true. I also haven't read Almost Astronauts (hard to find a copy of that one, I agree). I love Moonshot, but you know how techy the Newbery gets about non-fiction in the first place LET ALONE picture book non-fiction. Still, it would be awesome. I dunno, though. Some years they're open to it and some years they're not. I'm hoping for the former, but suspecting it'll be the latter.

In response to: 2010 Newbery and Caldecott Predictions: The Third of Four Kirsten Cappy commented: Because you have just finished CLAUDETTE COLVIN: TWICE TOWARDS JUSTICE, I thought you might like to hear a little from the grand woman herself. Because I am nut for this book and Phil Hoose's books, I pulled together audio and photos from their appearances together into a You Tube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZOpqtdd8nw
