Dish Network is Not Using Their Noggin

January 2, 2008

If you are like me and have young kids, then chances are good that your kids watch Noggin. I have a 4-year-old son at home (who will turn 5 years old tomorrow… Happy Birthday Richie!) and Noggin is a big part of his day. He always gets upset when it turns to 6pm and his friends Moose A. Moose and Zee say goodnight. At that time Noggin goes off the air and on comes “The N”a channel aimed at teens.

When Noggin goes off we switch the channel to another kid friendly channel, which is one of the Disney Channels, but the programs on these channels seem to wind him up more then calm him down, and he ends up going to bed pretending his is a “Power Ranger.”

Imagine how happy I was when Viacom announced on August 13th, 2007 that Noggin would be going 24 hours on December 31st, and that “The N” would be becoming its own separate channel, replacing Nick Games and Sports.

We woke up on the 31st to find Noggin on Dish Network; we went ahead in the guide and saw the listings for Noggin, it looked like indeed Noggin was now 24 hours. In looking around I could not find “The N”, I tuned to the Nick Games and Sports channel to find it still on the air. I thought that was strange, but didn’t pay too much attention to it.

On New Years Eve, my son and I sat and watched a special “Franklin” movie, this movie was to celebrate the fact that Noggin was now 24 hours. Part the way into it the movie cut off and we were now seeing “The N” instead. My son was upset he wanted to watch the rest of the movie. I am lucky enough to also have DirecTV so I let him watch the rest of the film in my bedroom.

For many other Dish Network customers they did not have the option to watch the end of the movie on DirecTV. Many of the online satellite forums had messages from angry parents about the lack of 24/7 Noggin (and others were upset that there is no 24/7 “The N”)

Calls into Dish Network by customers got a bunch of different answers of why Noggin and The N were not 24 hours on Dish Network. Some folks even used the online support chat feature that Dish Network offers and were told “DISH Network customers will NOT be impacted by the change for The-N/Noggin.”

What makes this even stranger is that every cable company and DirecTV have made the changes, Dish Network seems to be the only provider to still be timesharing Noggin and The N.

Emails to Dish Network and Viacom about this issue were not returned by press time. If I get anything I will update this entry.

If you have been a longtime Dish Network customer you have come to expect programming issues from Dish Network to start the year. Dish Network once again follows that tradition into 2008. Hey Dish Network please start using your Noggin!

Correction

In my year-end recap on Monday, I incorrectly stated that Dish Network was the first satellite company to broadcast in MPEG4. While that may have been true for national HD MPEG4, it was actually DirecTV who first used MPEG4 to transmit MPEG4 signals into the Detroit DMA.

I do apologize for the error.

On Friday we will be looking ahead to the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show!

I got confirmation from one of the publicity reps at Nick that Dish Network is the only provider doing this, and that Dish Network is the only provider that will be carrying Nick GAS. (Even the listing providers were anaware of this, initially Zap2it had SIGN OFF listed for GAS on Monday and TV Guide began listing programming for The N starting at 6am)

Still awaiting a response from them on a reason why Dish gets to have a private feed for GAS continue, and continue to split Noggin and The N, and why other providers didn't get the option to keep GAS.

I will change to a different provider if Dish does not show more respect for young families. They are going to lose a lot of business, especially when other providers are equal in price and better in programming. I don't get mad easily, especially about TV shows, but I am really upset about this whole thing!! Thanks for the write-up and keeping us updated.

Nick GAS is just a shell of it's former self, the only thing they show pre-90s is the late night airings of Finder's Keepers. Hopefull the fact that Nick GAS is continuing as a E* exclusive doesn't prevent Nick from continuing with their plan to move Nick GAS shows to Turbo Nick.

I am a Dish Network customer, and I too, called them on Dec. 31 to find out what was going on. I was told that Noggin is from 6 am to 6 pm and it was not scheduled to change. The CSR that I talked to was totally unaware that the network was supposed to become 24 hours. He even argued about the guide listings, and said that Franklin was not on! That seemed very unprofessional that the employees had no idea of the situation to even give suitable answers. Then I logged on to chat with a rep who said that I wouldn't be "incovenienced" by the change. Um, I wanted to be inconvenienced!! Nobody asked what I wanted--and I'm paying the bill!!

My wife and I are very disappointed in this programming move by Dish. We too were looking forward to having Noggin available 24 hours a day. It's not as if Dish doesn't have the bandwidth to give both Noggin and The N their own dedicated channels. The EPG is even screwed up - it lists Noggin programming overnight on 169, even though they're feeding The N. I hope Charlie corrects this problem soon, or he may lose a good number of subs to DirecTV or even cable.

Here's a transcript of a Chat I had with one of their probably not-located-in-America Customer Service Representatives on 01/02/07. We need to fight this. Let's FLOOD Dish with calls, chats, e-mails, etc. etc. They can have a dozen shopping channels, tons of Pay Per View, etc etc....but family programming gets treated as unpimportant. Let's let them know that this is UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!

Here's the Chat:

(03)Matthew M: It has been a while I have not received your response, are you still with me?

George: are you still there
(03)Matthew M: Yes.
(03)Matthew M: Please go ahead with the issue?
George: why are you not carrying Noggin 24 hours
George: it's now a 24 hour channel
(03)Matthew M: Our Noggin/N will remain as it always has been; split between the two feeds for 12 hours at a time. However, we are still receiving the guide info from Noggin as it will be broadcast. We do have until Wednesday to correct the guide feed (programming should not change tonight) but will hopefully have this resolved over night or by the morning. You can be assured that we are working on this and that we will continue showing both feeds as we do now.
(03)Matthew M: Nick GAS is not being removed and will continue business as usual.

(03)Matthew M: You will receive the N channel from 6 PM to 6 AM ET as before on channel 169.
George: you're not answering my question. My question is: why is Dish opting to NOT carry Noggin' 24/7??? I, as a paying customer, want this channel 24/7 for my kids. Please answer my question.
(03)Matthew M: I am sorry as if now we don't have any updates for it.
George: what do you mean you don't have any updates. I'm asking why your company is shunning quality programming for little children?
(03)Matthew M: I understand you concern.
(03)Matthew M: I submit your request to the programming management.
George: That is appreciated. So, to be clear, are you saying that you do not know why Dish is purposely taking Noggin' off the air at 6pm Eastern and, thus, taking childrens' programming off the air.
(03)Matthew M: I am as if now we don't have any updates on it.
(03)Matthew M: ****sorry**.
George: okay...please tell your management that you've spoken to an upset customer who is, right now, going to look into switching to digital cable or DirecTV - both of which are now offering Noggin 24/7.
(03)Matthew M: Okay.

I just spent a very looooooong time on the phone with 3 different people from Dish Network. At this time they are not showing that they will carry the new programming. However, if enough people call and request a programming change - they will consider a change. No one that I spoke with said anything about any technical difficulties, instead all 3 people said that they are showing that dish customers will not be affected by the Noggin/N programming change. PLEASE, PLEASE call dish and tell them that you want 24/7 Noggin and 24/7 the N. PLEASE!!!

I have a better solution. I'm dropping DISH and going with another provider that carries Noggin 24/7. It's being installed next week. That's the great thing about competition. This is typical of DISH. Their service is spotty and thier customer service is non-existent. They have a "You'll take what we give you and you'll like it" attitude. no more.

I have called two or three times myself and will call again this evening if things have still not changed. I will be moving in a few months so I probably will not switch providers at this time, but if they do not go to the 24/7 Noggin programming I will NOT be using Dish Network when we settle into a new home elsewhere. I'm VERY disappointed about this, as is my husband and my 4 year old son. It might not be so bad if Noggin and Nick weren't advertising it all the time saying Noggin is 24/7, so my son doesn't understand why he can't watch Noggin after 5pm. The customer service reps I talked with were very rude with me. I honestly expect the same when I call this even as I'm sure things will be the same this evening. I think I'll probably switch regardless when I move actually. I've never had trouble with Dish in the past but this is just becoming unacceptable.

Seems a bit suspicious to me. I wonder how many of the above are Viacom employees pushing Dish to "get with the program" and take their programming as is.

And for those parents, please chill out, turn off the TV, and have your kids do something else for a while.

Hi all...so looks like many of you, like myself, made the switch from Dish to Directv due the Dish not providing Noggin 24/7??

Are you all yet as enraged as I am!? If not, I'll inform you. Directv does show certain Noggin programing 24/7, but not all of it. For example, you know the Backyardigans movie "Tail of the Mighty Nights", the movie they've been advertising on Noggin, but not showing it. Oh yeah, my neighbor with cable get the "true" and "full" and "as advertised" "new" Noggin 24/7 programming, BUT NOT DIRECTV. Guess what? I called Directv to complain they are not showing full Noggin 24/7 and they said, yeah, that happens all the time..sometimes cable show things satellite does not, and satellite show things cable does not...what's the big deal?

Well, the big deal is we want to see these movies that are advertised, and that Directv is NOT showing. Directv blames it on Noggin....I don't care, I want the full Noggin 24/7 programming as advertised...so I said I am not get this and I want to cancel and of course Directv will not waive the $499 early termination fee!!! I've had this service less than 2 weeks and I'm not getting what they advertise, yet I am getting screwed. Sounds like many of you are going to learn about this too.

What do I do?

What are you talking about? DirecTV has the same Noggin feed as Cable, I get schedules directly from Nick's publicity dept and it's the same schedule as they have. Talked to a supervisor at DISH tonight and was told that they made the decision to only show Noggin 6 AM to 6 PM, as has been the past, even though the programming is now available 24 hours. I was also told this was done in the interest of the customer. I strongly disagreed that this was in my daughter's interest, or that of any parent of a pre-schooler, and also expressed my opinion that it raised doubts in this customer's mind about the decision making of the company. There is no question about the quality of Noggin for pre-schoolers. And DISH has nothing else to offer this audience after 6:00 PM with any consistency. I encourage all parents to call and write. Also, Comcast is willing to give us a free DVR with new service & 3 free months of HBO+. We were thinking of possibly staying with Dish if they would waive the fee of the DVR for service, to make us want to stay. They were only willing to lower the price of the DVR to $25. That's ridiculous. I say good riddance to Dish, we're calling Comcast today to change!

We get lots of fun with this one. We tend not to turn on the television until later in the day, so of course the girls are upset to see "Max and Ruby coming up next!" and then it doesn't...

But then some nights like tonight (it's 6:05 and Noggin IS in fact on...) it doesn't switch to the N.... and sometimes late at night, it switches back and forth between the two every 30 seconds or so... 30 seconds of Max and Ruby, 30 seconds of Keenan & Kel... I mean seriously - do it or don't do it!!

We actually had gotten rid of Noggin for a while, but when the NFL network suddenly stopped being part of our programming, we decided to pony up the extra $8/month to get it back, and were delighted that Noggin came back with it...

This has to be just another dispute between Dish Network and Viacom.

If this were a dispute between Dish and Viacom, I'm sure that Viacom wouldn't be providing them an exclusive feed of Nick GAS. I don't think things are going to change for a long time, but even so, I would never switch to Comcrap. The digital channels on Dish look so much better than the analog-marketed-as-digital channels on any cable service. I just record "Pocoyo" off PBS. My kid will watch that show any time of the day or night.

I'm a new customer and I'm just now hearing about this noggin not 24/7 thing. My son isn't parked in front of the tv set all day but he is Autistic and a runner/escape artist. When I need to do dishes or some other chore for a half hour he gets free time and chooses to watch Noggin and will sit fairly still without trying to get out of the house.

I don't need it piped in 24/7 because he's not watching it past 7:30pm. I've never had a DVR until now so my solution is to DVR as much noggin as I can while he's at school and if I need to reference it for a half hour, then I've got my new DVR!!

I can understand why some parents may find the change annoying and switch especially if you have the option. But, for those of us who don't, use that DVR! Life is so full of challenges for my family that I am thankful to have something this easy to solve. Good day everyone!!

I have been calling and working to get a correction made to my online account (zip code incorrect in the online system) for over 6 months and still today I am continually put on hold, (30 - 40 mins. @ a time) and told it has to go to an 'Executive Committee' to correct the information on my online account or to reset the account so I can reregister and start all over.
Records indicate I have been calling since at least April of 2008 and yet everytime I call on this simple problem that has a simple solution that an entry level IT professional could solve I am put on hold, told the system are down and call back, have to get supervisor, have to get executive committee to tell them what to do, pay more on my account, cannot do anything till after payments post, etc.
This is the absolute worst service I have ever received and the most nit-wit excuses for non-action I have heard of!
Yet again I have to call back and try online tomorrow to see if anything has been done.
