No, the Other Rose Fox
April 10, 2009
Genreville is on hiatus at the moment (as you may have noticed) while I get caught up; between traveling, recently moving offices, and writing all the feature material for Monday's SF/fantasy focus issue, I've been a little busy.
I would like to break radio silence for a moment, however, in order to note that yes, I'm aware that
Freda Warrington's forthcoming novel from Tor has
a main character named Rose Fox; no, I had nothing to do with it and don't know her at all, and I doubt she's ever heard of me (though I am quirking a suspicious eyebrow at Jim Frenkel, her editor, who might have); yes, I think it's hilarious*; and yes, I feel pretty confident that I can assign it for review without a conflict of interest.
* Especially since when I was an intern at Tor, one of the editors rejected a slushpile manuscript for what were undoubtedly well-thought-out and excellent reasons; but the note he left in the logbook said simply "Someone with my name dies on page 5". In another universe, where my internship turned into an editorship instead of ending with me being tossed out on my ear**, Warrington's manuscript might have landed on my desk and given me an opportunity to balance out that long-ago rejection!
** Long story.
Now whenever anyone asks me for a bio, I can now tell them "Rose Fox is a woman born to magic but tormented by her place in her adopted world" and have a reference to back it up! That's kind of awesome. If this messes with my Google rankings, though, all bets are off.
Incidentally, if your name is Sam Wilder, drop me a note. I have an idea for next year's Arisia masquerade.
