Requiescat in Pace: Kurt Vonnegut
April 12, 2007
The first thing I saw on the news this morning was that Kurt Vonnegut has died.
From the
Washington Post obituary:
"Vonnegut said the villains in his books were never individuals, but culture, society and history, which he said were making a mess of the planet. "We probably could have saved ourselves, but we were too damned lazy to try very hard . . . and too damn cheap," he once suggested carving into a wall on the Grand Canyon, as a message for flying-saucer creatures."
Do you remember the first time you read a Vonnegut novel? I do, and it was electrifying:
Breakfast of Champions. I was probably too young to be reading it, but in retrospect I think that was a good thing, because I was so thrilled by Vonnegut's complete disregard for all of the literary conventions I'd been carefully taught.
What was your first Vonnegut? Slaughterhouse-Five? Cat's Cradle?
