Requiescat in Pace: Kurt Vonnegut
April 12, 2007

The first thing I saw on the news this morning was that Kurt Vonnegut has died.

From the Washington Post obituary:

"Vonnegut said the villains in his books were never individuals, but culture, society and history, which he said were making a mess of the planet. "We probably could have saved ourselves, but we were too damned lazy to try very hard . . . and too damn cheap," he once suggested carving into a wall on the Grand Canyon, as a message for flying-saucer creatures."

Do you remember the first time you read a Vonnegut novel? I do, and it was electrifying: Breakfast of Champions. I was probably too young to be reading it, but in retrospect I think that was a good thing, because I was so thrilled by Vonnegut's complete disregard for all of the literary conventions I'd been carefully taught.

What was your first Vonnegut? Slaughterhouse-Five? Cat's Cradle?

Slaughterhouse-Five is required reading in high schools nowadays (rightfully so). However, required reading isn't really reading at all, is it? I was a late bloomer. My first real Vonnegut read was in college, Sirens of Titan, and I've been in love ever since. Rest In Peace, Mr. Vonnegut. He was a damn fine writer.

My first Vonnegut was Slaughterhouse-Five, and I loved it. I read it for pleasure in college, because it had never been assigned to me. After reading Cat's Cradle next, I was hooked. I quickly bought all the Vonneguts I found at Strand Bookstore, and have been working on my goal of reading all of his works. I was extremely sad to hear that he died. I stopped reading the book I was reading, and picked up Breakfast of Champions in honor of him. I can't believe I haven't read it yet, it's so many people's favorites.

Gondaba, you've inspired me to re-read Sirens of Titan. I never had any Vonnegut assigned -- in high school, college, or grad school. Which is sad...
