LitNotes: And The Winner Is...
October 12, 2007
Remember the old saw "horses sweat, men perspire, women glow?" I decided to apply it to some winners from this week...
She's Golden: Much is always made about the amount of the Nobel Prize award ($1.85 million), but how can you put a price on a life's artistic achievement? Doris Lessing says that in hte 1960s the Nobel committee "...sent one of their minions especially to tell me they didn't like me at the Nobel Prize and I would never get it. So now they've decided they're going to give it to me. So why? I mean, why do they like me any better now than they did then?"
They're Short-Listed: You've probably already seen the nominees for the National Book Award elsewhere, but they help round out my little conceit today -- and why shouldn't they be listed in as many places as possible? I'm cheering for Ferris, Danticat, Hass, and Alexie -- you?
He's Solvent: "I spent most of my advance while shopping for groceries last week at Target," says debut novelist Christopher Kelly. Nonetheless, he's got plenty of people asking him for advice on how to write and publish a novel, so he provides some. Hey, the road to the Nobel has to start somewhere!
