Page-Burner: A Semi-Regular Guessing Game
August 6, 2007

Which book currently has me enthralled?

Is it Beyond Reach by Karin Slaughter, a terrifiying examination of white supremacy and meth in our time?

Is it Divisadero by Michael Ondaatje, with its stream-of-subconsciousness narrative structure?

Or is it Lottery by Patricia Wood, whose whimsical premise ("Gump wins megamillions") is enchanting readers?

The first to guess correctly wins my admiration (as always) -- and if you're reading any or all of the above, tell us what you think?

I think you are reading Lottery! We're still in Summer reading season and fun is the keyword.

I'm going with Lottery too; but aren't "meth" and "supremacy" mutually exclusive terms?

Beyond Reach - it is terrifying and heartwrenching. I don't see how you could start any of Slaughter's books and not be enthralled beginning to end.

I'm not telling, yet... I'll let a few more guesses in... Terri, Slaughter is truly gifted, isn't she?

Karin Slaughter gives a nice rowdy ride for the money, (Jesus, that sounded way wrong) but do you ever wonder if thriller writers just use white supremacists as villainous foils because they're too chicken to suicide-bomb you if they take offense? (And a bit less dated than satanists) Sorry for picking nit; I should just let a good story fly on its own wings...

A Harvard study has just been released that says diversity isn't working. We should have known because political correctness is nothing but a tool that hides problems with diversity. What is the difference between white supremacy groups and Zionists? What is the difference between an Aryan nation and a Jewish state. Hasn't the USA become a nation of various groups with each seeking its own interests? Don't terms such as "white supremacy" and "anti-semitism" serve to silence debate.

Re Barbara's note. Maybe you should have named this game: Six degrees of wacko political views; or, how many messages along a thread does it take to get totally off topic and totally on to a new, conspiracy-theory related one? I'm always shocked at how few steps it seems to take!

I'll guess Lottery, too (and try to get things refocused here). Just returned from a week at the beach where I read my BEA copy, handed it off to my wife, who also zipped through it. We're both now casting the movie roles...

sorry to contribute to the off-focus thing here. Won't do it again. My guess is also the Karin Slaughter book (though confess never to having heard of her before!)

I admire Ondaatje. BUT I'll take a guess say Lottery. The main character and voice is unique and unlike anything we've seen in a very long time. She pretty much blows away and perceptions of "slow" that either the oldie Flowers For Algernon or Forest Gump ever set forth. And it's fun.
