What's On Your Gift List?: A (Very Occasional) Feature
December 3, 2007

Every month or so I ask what's on your nightstands... and I usually tell you what's on mine, too (hooray for captive audiences... ). This month, in anticipation of the holidays, I'd like to ask which books you're hoping to receive. The entire Sue Grafton oeuvre? A signed James Beard cookbook? Precious first editions?

I don't get many books, since most friends and family (wrongly, I tell you!) assume that I get as many as I want and need in the mail. But still, posting the books I want here would just seem downright greedy, so instead, I'm going to mention a few book gifts of holidays past that I truly loved:

They Call Me Naughty Lola: Personal Ads from the London Review of Books by David Rose from my friend K.

Delia Smith's Christmas from old friends I. and R.

The Physiology of Taste by Antoine Brillat-Savarin from my mother (the link is to a Penguin edition; she gave me a huge fabulous facsimile edition)

Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare by Stephen Greenblatt from Mr. Bethanne

What are you hoping shows up in a distinctive book-shaped package for Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Yule, this year?

I'm hoping for Due Considerations by John Updike. I want to spend months meandering through the essays and savoring the writing- three weeks from my Library is not time enough for this one.

You know, working in a bookstore sort of spoils the whole book-as-gift thing for me. I like to ask for the things I would never buy, but enjoy nonetheless. To give Santa a range to choose from, I asked for Stephen Hunter's 47th Samurai, The Delivery Man By local author, Joe McGinniss Jr. and The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs. We will see which one he chooses to give.

My Mother In-law usually gets me the booker prize winner and then gets my husband (who never reads it) a follow up title. So I'm always looking forward to that.

As a children's fantasy writer (The Call to Shakabaz), I read a lot of children's fantasy books. I keep hearing (in the kidlitosphere) about a fantasy that's supposedly terrific by Mark David Gerson called "The MoonQuest." I can't find it at the library. I guess they don't have it yet. So I'd love a copy! I also keep hearing about the Kendra Candelstar book. (Can't remember the author offhand, it's a hit with the folks at Just One More Book! -- the online kidlit people up in Canada.) I can't afford to buy many books so I get most of them from our tri-county library system. I have a heap on request there, but they're newer books so it takes a while to get to my place in line. OK, now a lot of books are suddenly popping into my mind, I better stop before I start writing a Christmas list a mile long! Amy (visit me at wozabooks)

Stephanie, may Santa grant that Kindle... and Tony, I love that you could get any of those books, but that you've chosen to wait and receive. Marta, I agree that some books need to be slowly considered and savored -- and Amy, some of those, of course, are YA, which is why I'm delighted that I waited and allowed my friend I. (he of the Delia Smith gift) to send me The Golden Compass this year.

This year my list is full of "boring" books (that I'm very excited about) for upcoming writing projects, or books about writing in general(i.e. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott). Of course, I have so many more "fun" books on my inner wish-list, but my paper wish-list is way too long already!

For Amy and anyone else trying to find my fantasy, "The MoonQuest," it's available on Amazon and at selected bookstores coast-to-coast. There are also free excerpts at www.themoonquest.com.
