BEA-O-Rama: My Friend John
May 31, 2007

Regular readers of my various blogs will know that in the past, I was Editor-at-Large for the (may it rest in peace) wonderful book magazine, PAGES. Many of you probably worked with the Editor-in-Chief of that publication, John Hogan. Since the moment in 2001 when I met John and told him "I plan to make myself indispensable to you," we have been Best Friends Forever, thick as thieves, each other's favorite bete noir, and so on and so forth. We've also now been to at least four Book Expos together out of six that we could have attended.

The reason I tell you so much about my devotion to John is that it's only 9:30 a.m. on this BEA Thursday, and already we've been chatting for an hour about books, movies, TV, music, and even why Rosie is a big crybaby. In rapid-fire witty dialogue that recalls the best of "The Gilmore Girls" (I am Lorelei and that's non-negotiable), we've ranged from The Namesake (I loved the book, John loved the movie; now switch!) to "The Simpsons," (a classic); fom The Religion by Tim Willocks (alas, we're nonbelievers) to "The Office" (John really needs to get the Ricky Gervais version in his Netflix queue, tout de suite); and we've marveled at John's new hometown (he just moved to New York three months ago), where you can poke your head out of the window and see hot NY firemen even as Jimbo's rings the bell and delivers your hot breakfast. (Lest any of you doubt the Maven's devotion to Mr. Bethanne, I'm staying at the Hotel Chandler... an early breakfast was the only time John and I could grab for gab during this maelstrom).

In other words, my mind is already full of names, ideas, cultural references -- exactly as it needs to be for another BEA. Let the games begin!

PS: Thanks so much to all of you who left comments yesterday; keep them coming. I'll try to stop by as many booths and events as I can if you let me about them. And everyone -- save me a galley...

Hi Bethanne It is with great fondness that I recall last years BEA held in Washington, D.C.. That was the first one I ever attended, whether as a guest just looking and browsing or an exhibitor. Karen, my co-author, and I were exhibitors with our first novel - - the romantic novel Morning Coffee by Elizabeth Alan. You know the story of our author's name. In fact you know the story of us. Having people wait in line at the autograph session we were at was quite heady for first time author's. In fact just being in the same room with the other author's was quite exhilerating. We can't wait to go back next year. Hopefully we'll be done with our second effort which is tentatively titled at this time Destiny Cafe. Have a great time at the BEA. I may be in to visit and take in the ambiance over the weekend. Chester Alan Blum (the male half of Elizabeth Alan)

Hi, Bethanne. Thanks for your update on John Hogan. I was wondering where he went after Pages folded. Glad to hear that he's thriving in NYC. Please tell him that we miss him here in San Diego. Also...what is Beth Fhaner doing? I miss her too! Tricia (Formerly with Harcourt.)

Hi, Bethanne, Having attended BEA, I'm enjoying your witty and lively commentary. But I was disappointed to see you misspelled "Lorelai Gilmore";this is an understandable typo, though--what an odd way to spell Lorelei!

Patricia, I am ashamed and stand corrected. I can only plead that I have not watched enough of 'Gilmore Girls.' Thanks for your kind words... will hope to keep you reading...
