LitLunch: Adriana Bourgoin
June 20, 2007
Adriana Bourgoin and I have a lot in common: we went to the same college, worked for the same corporation, and are both wives and mothers living and working in the same metropolitan area. Somehow, despite sharing these things and several friends/colleagues, we'd never met.
Fortunately, one of those colleagues decided to close the gap: "Adriana, you're about to publish your first novel" he said, "You need to call Bethanne. She loves books more than anyone else I know."
I'm glad he connected us. We tried and failed to meet up during BEA (we have something else in common: we're both cock-eyed optimists), and finally carved out time in our schedules for lunch yesterday.
We didn't manage to get through half of the things we wanted to talk about -- but it was a lot of fun. It's always interesting to get a first-time author's persepctive on a book release, too. "It's a lot of work," said Adriana. "You have to get creative about places for special sales." (Since Nine Months in August is about pregnancy and babies, Adriana found spots for it in maternity/children's boutiques.) She's actively seeking out signing and event opportunities, and will be at this one on Saturday.

Adriana is discovering that the more an author puts in to her own book, the more successful it will be. Since she's already hard at work on her second novel (which has a fun concept and title), I hope she has a lot of it. After all, fellow alums/former colleagues/working moms need to stick together...
Authors: what's the biggest step you've ever taken on your book's behalf?
Publishers: what's the best thing an author can do to help a book succeed?
Readers: what's your favorite type of author event?
