The Ladies Who Read
January 11, 2008

When you've got "yoga, tennis, and paddle" on your schedule, skipping the gym to attend a book party is a real sacrifice. Fortunately for author Kelly Corrigan, that's exactly what Amanda "Mandy" Brooks's toned and tony Rye, NY friends did. As Lynn Andriani reports in "Books: The New Tupperware?", many missed their workouts to spend a morning sipping "Pellegrino and coffee" and chatting about Corrigan's new memoir, The Middle Place (Voice).

Private book parties really aren't anything new, since authors of all stripes have friends who hold them. What's new here is the time and the demo: morning in Westchester, and women 35-45. I'm amazed that this hasn't caught on sooner, to tell you the truth; anyone out there who's ever been in a book group knows that there are times when you're caught without that month's title. Why not have a book group where reading isn't required -- but buying a copy is? If you get to meet the author, too -- as this Westchester group did -- even better.

Now, if someone could just figure out how to get me to skip my regular reading schedule to attend a yoga class...

As an author, I think this is great news on many fronts. First, women are taking time for themselves to read and share their thoughts and feelings with one another. Second, they are supporting authors. I hope this is a trend that continues!
