The Invisible Library Blog -- Contest!

October 20, 2008 Invisible Library by botanizeJust when I think there's nothing to blog about, I find something new that leads me down a delightful rabbit hole. Via ArtsJournal I came upon this Guardian Books Blog post about the best books that never existed. As is usual when I read The Guardian's Books Blog, I find the comments to be more interesting than the actual posts -- and one commenter contributed a link to The Invisible Library, a blog that collects fictional works of fiction.

Wouldn't you like to read D. Awdrey-Gore's The Toastrack Dilemma? What about Udo Conrad's Memoirs f a Forgetful Man? And oh, Leila J. Pinckney's entire body of work...what larks!

This is going to be my last week blogging here at Publishers Weekly; I'll tell you more about what I'm doing next and where you'll be able to find me online later in the week, but because it's my last week and because I've had so much fun over the last 18 months writing my posts and reading your comments, I want to offer a few fun contests over the next few days. The first: anyone who can call out a fictional book that's not listed in The Invisible Library wins a grab-bag of five new books (mix of hardcover and softcover, just-released and slightly older). I'll do this for up to ten winners. Let's see if we have that many!

The Mrs. Americas by Brett Tyler
Michaelangelo's Ghost by M.F. O'Mara

both from The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton.

Sigh. I see that when I post, line breaks get deleted. So I'll try this again: I have two, both from my own novel so perhaps I don't deserve free books, but... The Mrs. Americas by Brett Tyler, and Michaelangelo's Ghost by M.F. O'Mara - both from The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton, published by Ballantine Books.

Oh, these are such fun! I'll have to sort through them later today, but we obviously have winners...and Terri wins a special mention for the latest/freshest pick with her "Izzy Bickerstaff" from "Guernsey!" Thanks, everyone, for playing. I'll be doing more of these games and giveaways in my new location, so stay tuned...

I’m so pleased to see that the idea of a catalogue of books that exist only in other books continues to spread throughout the human memepool. My first encounter with this concept took the form of Mr. Brian Quinette’s catalogue, now defunct, alas. Fortunately, however, an archived copy does exist. A link to that archive, and to several other collections of invisible books, are available at the Malibu Lake Branch of The Invisible Library, co-curated by my wife Fayaway and me. It can be found by searching in Google. Thank you for documenting this highly entertaining and increasingly useful information—doubt not, o archivists, but persist!

Curiously,

Hermester Barrington,
Chief Archivist, Law Offices of Petty, Smilodon, & Ruth (ret.)

you missed an impressive book about an impressive fictious book:

Author Pascal Mercier (that is: Peter Bieri)
Title Night Train to Lisbon
Pseudo-Author Amadeu Inacio Almeida Prado
Pseudo-Title Um Ourives das Palavras (a goldsmith of words), Lisbon 1975

i can absolutely recommend this philosophically loaded story!

all the best from berlin _ will i receive any books now ;-?
