The Crystal Ball is Crystal Clear
January 8, 2008

I was excited to see and read this piece by Mike Shatzkin on PW.com, because I truly believe that whether or not his predictions are right, they're forward looking (and actually, I think most of them are right). Shatzkin's points deserve a wider discussion (maybe I'll attack is piecemeal, since I can't handle it all today), but one point leapt out at me since it's been part of my consciousness for a while, now:

"14. Publishers will push harder to publicize books through the Internet channels as print and broadcast media continue to lose audience to the Web, in particular subject-specific sites."

This isn't just a forecast; it's an imperative. All of us -- publishers, authors, journalists -- need to work independently and together to figure out what's next for book coverage.
