Recommended Reading: 'I Love You, Beth Cooper'

I wasn't able to attend the party last night for this funny, funny book (maybe Karen Holt did; check out her blog), but I was able to read it. I'm glad to say it's so good that I was torn: it's smart and snarky enough that I think teens should be allowed to read it just because it's a great story -- but it's got enough Adult Content that I can't in good conscience recommend it for teens.

Doyle is best known for his work on 'The Simpsons' and 'Beavis and Butthead' -- so it's no surprise that this book has the frenetic pacing of a cartoon and the subtle characters thereof as well. Still, Supergeek Denis Cooverman, who chooses to exclaim the title during his high school valedictory speech, is that most sympathetic character: Everyteen, attempting to morph into an acne-scarred butterfly and not miss out on one second of possible sex along the way.

Isn't it interesting how the Gossip Girls get to stay out till all hours with no credit card limits and surf their hormones till they drop, but a teenage boy who isn't safely handicapped by some crippling life tragedy or disability isn't allowed to do the same? Double standard? Nah, we're just "concerned", that's all... (You're right, though-this is a great book)
