LitNotes: Reasons to Believe
March 14, 2008
Congratulations, Kate Christensen: I liked The Great Man so much that I not only reviewed it; I named a LitNotes entry in its honor. I'm delighted that Kate Christensen has won the PEN/Faulkner award, and I urge you to read her previous book, The Epicure's Lament, too. I'm still a little in love with Hugo, despite my better judgment.
Mma Ramotswe, Small-Screen Star: Alexander McCall Smith's quietly delightful No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency novels will be adapted for TV by the BBC in partnership with HBO. Anthony Minghella will direct, and Richard Curtis is co-writer, with Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose starring as Ramotswe and her secretary Mma Makutsi. Forget "Sex and the City;" Botswana is where it's at.
The Seattle Effect: Amazon, Costco, and Starbucks all affect our book-purchasing choices, and they're all headquartered in Seattle. Is it ours to reason why? Or simply we must go, and buy? (Oh, groan...I know...)
