LitNotes: Changes in Attitude
August 8, 2008
Looking (Really Looking) at Plagiarism: This week,
Slate published a piece by Jody Rosen about plagiarism of an article about Jimmy Buffett. My friend Tammi Marcoullier is the Editorial Director of
Publish2, a new Web-based app that allows journalists to showcase clips and organize research -- all through the power of the link. As she points out in their blog, linking to articles that you use for research might cut down on plagiarism. That's true, but do you think there are drawbacks?
Reconsidering Literary Discourse: "To put it simply: There may be much more to a work of literature -- especially if one reads closely and thinks carefully -- than the author intended." New Criticism isn't as old and worn as some theoryheads might have us all believe.
Very Different Approaches to Travel: "The 10 Oddest Travel Guides Ever Published" by Paul Collins takes a look at
oddities like this one about night-climbing at Cambridge University (an important source for
Ivo Stourton's equally odd and quite enjoyable novel, The Night Climbers). What's the oddest travel guide you've ever used? (BTW, if you've never read one of
these, they make great "loo books" as my dear friend C. says).
