BEA 2007 Parties: Galley Cat/Mediabistro

June 1, 2007

It's Day One of BEA, and I've already marked and placed my boxes in the Shipping booth downstairs, gotten a latte while the Starbucks line wasn't too long, and snagged Wiley and McGraw-Hill totes. Whew. My goal this year is to be as light and swift of foot as possible, so I'm not collecting too many galleys (send them, send them, send them -- by now you all know my little addiction problem), and I don't have my laptop with me (even though Mr. Bethanne helped me find a divine one that is only 2.2 pounds, I don't need to schlep today). So, I'm typing up this post on the Galley Cat party at Lolita Bar in the Press Room, and there are a few foreign press people who are waiting patiently to file... I'll be brief.

But that's not because the party wasn't a lot of fun. I knew where to find the bar by the crowd of badge-wearing black-clad publishing ladies standing on the corner of Broome and Allen... and the first one I saw was, most appropriately, my friend and role model in all things blogworthy, M.J. Rose. She was chatting with a number of authors and agents, and we promised to catch up in a longer way at the Buzz Panel this afternoon.

I headed inside to say hello to Galley Cats Ron Hogan and Sarah Weinman, who seemed to be having a great time but were both remarkably mellow (I know they'd been working all day since I saw them yesterday morning at the convention center). A man grabbed my elbow... it was another friend, Esquire editor-at-large and soon-to-be famous movie star and author of The Know-It-All A.J. Jacobs -- he told me his twins (boys) are doing really well, and then I was off to talk to Kevin Smokler. His new BookTour endeavor partner is none other than The Long Tail's Chris Andersen... I can't wait to find out more about it.

Speaking of not being able to wait, I've got to head to the blog panel here (hence my dearth of links). I'll be back in an hour or so to talk about the very chic and civilized William Morrow party at 60 Thompson. Don't forget to read Karen Holt's The Morning After blog for more BEA party info!

Bethanne:
I wish I could be at BEA and am enjoying your blog for a vicarious hit. I'm back here in California where our little community is having its own "LitFest" this weekend. Please go hear the Rock Bottom Remainders and tell us all about it. If I were there, that would be number one on my list.
