BEA-O-Rama: My Friend Frank
June 4, 2007
One of the best things, of course, about Book Expo America, is that you see so many people you want to -- both by appointment, and by drive-by ("Hello! I'm on my way to a panel/in a meeting/desperately need to make it to the ladies' room, but we'll have lunch!").
However, how many times do you meet someone you've always meant to meet because, like a dork, you've forgotten to take off a party nametag?
Such was the case on Thursday evening when I left the Galley Cat party at Lolita Bar en route to Morrow's party at 60 Thompson. I was still sporting my stick-on label and had just crossed Allen to try and wave down a cab. Cab pulls over, and because I am
really ready to hop in and rest my feet, I stand obnoxiously close to its door as the occupants exit.
Now, again: it wouldn't be surprising to see someone you already know in the publishing world getting out of a taxi close to a BEA party spot -- but as man leaves cab, I have no earthly idea who he is, and he says "Now here's someone I know -- Bethanne Patrick!"
Dork with nametag, meet
Frank Portman, author of
King Dork (aka Dr. Frank) -- you can listen to my interview with him from last year
here. (Listen and learn why Dr. Frank has a lot to say about Holden Caufield.)
