Summertime, and the Reading Is Easy... Part II
July 3, 2007
The real shame in my reading
The Diana Chronicles? I could not put the book down. No matter what you think of Tina Brown, give the woman this: she can write entertaining prose with the best of them. Given the fact that much of her material is familiar, this goes a long way (we've all heard Prince Charles burble on about Camilla's trousers before, thankyouverymuch).
In the spirit of light reading, I'd like to share
this link: The Guardian reads, so you don't have to, and summarizes in a Mock Tina-tone:
"It would be easy to condemn Diana for both her behaviour and her choice of men, but that kind of tittle-tattle has no place in an extensively researched, revisionist hagiography. Just let it be said that everyone -- apart from me -- is the poorer for the passing of the People's Princess."
I love
this piece, too:
"9 An international contest to find the most unfortunate sentence in Tina Brown's new biography of Diana has been won by: 'The gently flushed skin of her face wasn't just peachy; it was softer than a child's velveteen rabbit'."
C'mon, based on yesterday's comments (at least from my colleague Ms. Kirch), quite a few of us have succumbed to the siren song of this latest
hagiography biography. If you have, please share your favorite "revelation." Mine? I think it would have to be that the Queen signed her letter requesting that Diana accede to a divorce "Love from Mama."
