Home Library of Dreams

October 9, 2008

Jay Walker's Library by jamesjkLike many avid readers, I sometimes daydream about what my perfect home library would look like: Here, the inscribed first editions; here, my cherished childhood books. But yesterday via Gawker I saw photos of a home library so awesome that it actually gave me nightdreams about putting together my perfect library. Instead of Manderley, last night I dreamt I was walking through a house in which bookshelves were the main feature of every room, and each shelf or case was filled with my favorite reads. It was such a happy dream!

The linked article is from Wired, and it's about digital media mogul Jay Walker's amazing library. Walker, whose Walker Digital is the source of Priceline.com, has assembled what he calls "an engagement space." It's not just about books, although with a Kelmscott Chaucer, a Cellarius atlas, and a Coverdale Bible, it gives a great deal of real estate to the best of those. Walker also has items like the original Enigma code machine, a model of Sputnik, and a Questar 7 telescope.

Walker says "I started an R&D lab and have been an entrepreneur. So I have a big affinity for the human imagination,... About a dozen years ago, my collection got so big that I said, 'It's time to build a room, a library, that would be about human imagination.'"

How would you imagine your perfect library? Would it contain only books? Or would you also have music? Video? Tea-making supplies?

I'd have mainly books, but comfortable chairs (with ottomans!), reading lamps, blankets...maybe an espresso machine?

I would have a popcorn maker, a game table and lots of windows.

On the surface, my library would be like the Morgan Library in New York City. My personal collection would be like his, a nice space, with a mezzanine, and comfortable chairs to read in (or nap in). This would be part of my house, but separate. Perhaps on the second floor, with a large skylight. No windows, but a large balcony to enjoy the view if I care to read outside. Below ground would be at least ten sub-basements, housing my library and other collections.

When I dream of books, I dream of finding rare and unusual graphic novels.

Re: Mr. Walker's astounding library: I see a dismaying lack of cats, windowseats and comfy chairs. Although the Enigma machine may partially compensate...

You mean you've NEVER created a dream library before! Shame on you. I thought every librarian had one! Might is high with a bay window looking out on treetops or water. It is two stories with a mezzanine with chairs. There's MY SPACE by the window with a comfortable wing chair, a footstool and a small side table to hold my cup of tea, a lamp and a bookmark. I would have speakers and a music system for not only music but audiobooks. Not necessarily huge but cozy. Doesn't every woman dream of a "

I think I read in the Wired article that it's one of the actual Sputnik satellites, not a model. Crazy, huh?

I totally agree with Torsten's description--the Morgan library is my ideal! Though the sliding ladders and spiral staircase to the 2nd floor were left out of the description, and they are a MUST, as is a wood-burning stove (that someone else magically maintains for me--perhaps a house elf?). My husband tries to tempt me into moving by offering up a "library" for me, and it might just work one of these days!
