LitNotes: Pushing the Envelope -- and End Papers

December 14, 2007

The Highest Per-Word Rate Ever: What do you give the author who has everything? A huge bid on her book. A handwritten, custom-bound copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard fetched $4.54 million at an auction in Australia. The proceeds are going to The Children's Voice, a charity that J.K. Rowling founded for vulnerable children across Europe.

Book Shelves, Literally: I defy anyone to resist the appeal of Jim Rosenau's cases, shelves, and sculptures crafted from hardcover books, mainly those that "look better than they read." (Many people know Jim best as the co-creater of Haiku Error Messages.) I really want this one for myself -- especially after spending last night trying to put away all of my latest galleys, ARCs, and books in preparation for a family visit.

Shades of Gray Matter: As if it weren't harder and harder to be a book critic... now we have to figure out ethical questions, too? No wonder there were so many different answers to Question 17: "Should a literary blogger review the book of another literary blogger to whose blog she or he links?"

33.4 said "Yes."
23.4 said "No."
22.5 percent were "Not Sure."
20.7 percent retreated to "Other."

NBCC Survey Leader Carlin Romano asked: "Time for a panel?" (Romano also posted the full results of the survey here.)
