True Literary Criticism
May 16, 2007

What is true literary criticism?

I won't argue that literary/book blogs have gotten there yet. A few have; most (including this one) haven't. And for many blogs, that may not be the ultimate or even sought-after goal.

After reading this L.A. Times article about the recent newspaper book review versus book blogger "wars," I thought it relevant to ask what makes a real book review. We know it's not simply a plot summary. We know it's not just cheering a book on.

But has anyone asked if the nature of a book review has or should change in an era where my friend and colleague Ron Hogan reminds us there is "a huge amount of book-related information?"

Considering how many quite passable-to-excellent books fall through the cracks every season for lack of public notice, any blog, review, or mention is a good thing... As "literary criticism", it can often be responsible for really horrible reads dragging on years beyond their time-James Joyce comes painfully to mind here-so let's split the difference and not worry about it, shall we?
