Auden-ary People: Is that what Wystan Hugh Auden wanted to be -- more ordinary? This essay examines his American life and why it might have influenced his later, less readable poetry.

No Sex Please, We're British: Michiko Kakutani may have savaged it, but there are two far more measured (and affirming) reviews of Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach here (Yardley, WaPo) and here (Hitchens, The Atlantic). And, of course, Jonathan Lethem loved it.

Win-Win for Me?: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wins The Orange Prize for Half of a Yellow Sun, beating out Kiran Desai. I love Desai, and I'm a little sad that The Inheritance of Loss sustained one, but now I can't wait t read Adichie...

Another Look at Blooks: Structured blogs make better books! Who knew?

What are you reading this weekend? I'm about to take a look at Susan Vreeland's Luncheon of the Boating Party...

I'm reading Bridget Kinsella's memoir, Visiting Life, that I procured while through Crown's booth last weekend at BEA! It's compelling, about her relationship with a lifer in the Calif. prison system. Amazing writer, amazing book, where's Oprah when you need to give her a book recommendation?

My reading schedule has been sadly derailed by all the pop-culture idiocy out here on the Coast-if the gripping saga of Paris's 3 days in jail falls through, my doctor may have to put me back on laudanum...

Claire, John Murphy of St. Martin's Press dubbed me "The Oprah of the Internet" in 2006, and since he's the nattiest dresser in publishing, I'll accept his opinion. HA. So listen up, people: Claire says 'Visiting Life' is amazing, and this "Boprah" trusts Claire's judgment.

Kevin, you have the vapors. The Book Maven recommends sussing out your nearest chaise longue and draping yourself across it. Let us make a pact: we will actively discourage purchases of Paris Hilton's soon-to-be-published memoir, 'Framed: The Prison Hours.'

Hey Gwen Haigh, I don't think that Bethanne, fabulous and multi-talented though she is, fulfills book orders. I'd order Bridget Kinsella's novel from my favorite independent if I were you.
