Blog O'Blarney
March 17, 2008
As my fellow PW bloggers have been noting, it's been a year since we first appeared on this home page. Happy Anniversary to us! (Coincidentally, this is my 250th post.)
Of course, some of you have been following me as the self-titled Book Maven since 2004, when I first started blogging. In my previous job, I was asked to create a blog and a title for it. Like everyone else that year, I'd read Malcolm Gladwell's
The Tipping Point, so the term "maven" was fresh in my mind.
Little did I know then, as I've since repeated to many people, that the word means both "expert" (I got that) and "freak" (if the word fits... ).
What? You expected someone with the last name "Kelly Patrick" to know Yiddish?
Names can be deceiving. While it's true that I'm not Jewish, it's also true that I'm not particularly Irish (there may be, between me and Mr. Bethanne, an entire one-hundredth drop of Hibernian blood). Does it count that I'd love to be either, or both?
In any case, I may not have the DNA, but I've got the name, so I celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Erin go bragh!
I may not have any official sanction as a Book Maven, either, but I'll keep celebrating books as long as I can. Thanks for reading this past year, and I hope you'll keep doing so -- commenting, too. Remember, you can email me any time: thereadingwriter at gmail dot com.
