Video for Bibliophiles: "Titlepage"
January 30, 2008

In case you missed it, Daniel Menaker has found his post-Random House calling; he'll be hosting an online video book show called "Titlepage," modeled after the French "Apostrophes," the Charlie Rose Show, and the Independent Film Channel's "Dinner for Five."

Menaker tells the New York Times that "the idea appealed to him immediately because he had always been frustrated that he didn’t have enough opportunities, either as a publisher or an author, to speak directly to readers.

“We’re hoping to let people listen in on the kind of conversation they might like to have themselves if there were a group of three or four people in a room,” he says.

How great is this? I don't watch very much TV or online video right now, not because I have anything against either one -- I just prefer and usually am reading. But if anything might tempt me away from my reading material, it would be a show about authors and their books. I look forward to seeing the first episode (which includes one of my favorite novelists, Richard Price) and will definitely write about it here.

Months ago here I asked who would be on your dream author panel -- now Menaker is actually putting those panels together. Who would you like to see gathered on his small-screen show?

This is great and long overdue. An old friend, Wodek Szemberg has been producing a show like this for TV Ontario in Toronto for years. Check it out. BIG IDEAS is the name of the show. Good luck to Menaker and the new show.
