Your Memorial Day Reading Plans
May 23, 2008

Do you read differently when you're on a holiday, or a trip? I've already mentioned my hammock; I'll be in it Day 213 - June is for reading in the hammocktomorrow afternoon with the new Elizabeth George, Careless in Red. While I don't tend to read things I'd never read at all when it's vacation time, I do tend to save a book or three that I'm really looking forward to for that time. (I believe I've mentioned my hoarding tendencies before, which Seth Godin has a good argument against...).

However, that's because I'm not particularly organized. You, dear readers, might be. Do you save up all of your mystery novels for long weekends? Set aside romance reads for a rainy day? I'd really like to know, especially because I haven't been able to find much about this out there in the blogosphere (of course, if that's merely because I'm searching badly, I rely on you to correct me).

(Thanks, Ginger_Blue, for the photo. That's not the view from my hammock, although it certainly could be, especially if there were an audio stream of steady snoring!)

It depends on what kind of vacation I'm going on. Since my husband isn't a reader, I can't take a Tom Clancy or Diana Gabaldon with me on a vacation with him. (Those are writers I get really wrapped up in, and read until 2am!) For vacations with him, I'll take shorter "fluffier" books that won't kill me to put down, good beach reads. I only read thrillers when traveling with him--otherwise the stalker might try to get me in my sleep while I'm alone on a business trip. And romance reads are for when I'm sick in bed or need to remind myself why I love my hubby!

I've saved the YA book, The Hunger Games for this weekend, and I am having a hard time putting it down. Very good so far. I have a few others, but I'm sure this will be my stay up until I'm finished book.

I'm reading Gargoyle, an August release, this weekend. But it's also clean the house weekend, and get rid of all the junk that piles up over the winter, so who knows how long it'll take me to read this gripping read that Sara Gruen compares to Life of Pi in her blurb on the back of the ARC.

I'm reading "The Worst Hard Time" Timothy Egan's gripping saga of the dust bowl disaster of the 30's; probably not the most cheerful choice given the direction of the economy and the way one of our major book chains is self-destructing...

Disaster, mayhem - and cute rats? I read Dean Koontz this weekend, interspersed with the DVD, 'Flushed Away' about a posh rat. With Hugh Jackman as the posh rat.
