What's On Your Nightstand?: Insomnia Edition
July 16, 2008

can't sleep....clowns will eat meI'm having trouble sleeping this week, and I keep picking up different books while I'm awake. Sometimes when I experience insomnia I can't do anything at all; I just lie in the dark and stare at the ceiling. This week's insomnia, however, has allowed me to put a small dent in my nightstand stack.Since there are currently ten more titles on it that I haven't even cracked, maybe I could use another sleepless week? As my friend Vittles Vamp would say, "Kine hora, puh puh puh!" Maybe I just need recommendations for books that will put me straight to sleep...

Last night, I finished this one:

The Matchmaker of Perigord By Julia Stuart

The previous night, this one:

And the night before that, this one:

(Sorry, that's the UK cover, since the Peters won't be released here until August 19.)

Tonight, I'm planning on reading this one, and while I hope that its length will put me to sleep, I've heard it's so good, that may not work:

What's keeping you up at night?

Just a question on my end. How long does it take you to finish a book? It seems like you're reading really fast.

Diane C., I do read really fast...I usually take between 3-4 hours to finish a 300-page novel, but I can read more quickly when I need to. For some reason (and that's why I decided to make a career out of reading and writing), I have an unusually high retention of what I read. As I may have mentioned here before, "maven" means both "expert," and "freak." I have a friend who swears that I'm more of the latter than the former when it comes to reading.

Why can't I read that quickly?!? I feel like I will definitely die without reading every book that I want to read, and there are new ones being published all the time . . .

I'm reading a bio. of Gertrude Bell as she has popped up in recent books as the one to blame for modern Iraq. I fall asleep reading, and continue to read in my dreams. The books are often better there.
