LitNotes: In No Particular Order
August 31, 2007
Brand New Idea: Well, not brand new, but brand new: my fave Superstar Publicist Lissa Warren shares her persepective on the publishing problem that dare not speak its name: brand identity: "I'd argue that recommendations by family and friends, and fabulous covers, and favorable reviews, and favorite authors are much more likely to catch our attention than a dolphin logo or a Borzoi silhouette."
Band of Brothers and Sisters: David Halberstam's friends (including Joan Didion, Bob Woodward, Anna Quindlen, and Seymour Hersh) are paying tribute to the deceased journalist and author by going on book tour for him. Here's one reason among many that Halberstam was a true mensch: he cared about the indies: "Mr. Halberstam’s favorite bookstore was Mitchell’s Book Corner on Main Street on Nantucket, his wife said. 'He tried really hard to be loyal to independent bookstores, and would have Mitchell’s U.P.S. him books in New York during the off season,' she said. 'We tried to split the money we spent on books between independents and the others.'"
Department of Cannot Wait: I can only hope that James Wood will write the kinds of pieces for The New Yorker that Anthony Lane does, the kind that make me turn to the back of the magazine first. I wish I could disagree with him more often -- there are Zadie Smith and Salman Rushdie novels that I love, but he's oh-so-right about The Autograph Man and Fury. Write on, Mr. Wood...
