Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch's Zagat's Guide to LA for BEA
May 9, 2008
If anyone can make Los Angeles seem angelic in the midst of demonic human hijinks, it would be Michael

Connelly. I don't read tons of detective novels or thrillers, but I always read Connelly's -- not only does he write well, he changes things up with each book, even within the same series.
This year Connelly's publisher, Hachette, has teamed up with the Zagat guidebook folks to create "Michael Connelly's Los Angeles 2008: Restaurants, Nightlife & Attractions," a special Book Expo America pub that's backed by a promo for Connelly's new novel,
The Brass Verdict, and some of the best passages from previous Connelly titles about the City of Angels. Here's a sample:
Mulholland Drive: Mulholland was literally the backbone of Los Angeles. It rode like a snake along the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains from one end of the city to the other. Clewiston knew of places where you could stand on the white stripe and look north across the vast San Fernando Valley and then turn around and look south and see across the west side and as far as the Pacific and Catalina Island. It all depended on whether the smog was cooperating or not. And if you knew the right spots to stop and look.
Mulholland had that top-of-the-world feel to it. It could make you feel like the prince of a city where the laws of nature and physics didn’t apply. The foot came down heavy on the accelerator. That was the contradiction. Mulholland was built for speed but it couldn’t handle it. Speed was a killer. — “Mulholland Dive”, Los Angeles Noir
Today, I've got 20 of this little gems to give away to readers who are able to answer a few Bosch trivia questions. I'll be giving away four at a time in five different blog entries, so check back frequently, because there will be a BEA-special giveaway tucked in there, too!
