Best of Booker -- Your Vote Counts!
June 23, 2008
I think this is exciting, but then I have a low threshold for excitement: spending two hours poolside yesterday
while reading The Spies of Warsaw was pretty thrilling for me.
So, the excitement is that to celebrate its 40th anniversary, The Man Booker Prizes has been accepting votes for a "Best of Booker" shortlist that consists of six much-lauded previous Booker honorees: Pat Barker, Peter Carey, JM Coetzee, JG Farrell, Nadine Gordimer and Salman Rushdie. I'm ashamed to say that until an alert reader notified me (thanks, Valerie!), I hadn't realized this voting has been going on since May. Heavens! I'd better hurry and decide for whom I'll be casting my ballot. (I'll admit there is one of the six I haven't read. Care to guess who it is? Or 'fess up to your own Booker deficit?)
One can even vote via SMS. Heavens to Murgatroyd, as my high-school Latin teacher would have said. Vote soon, as the opportunity is finished on July 8, and the winner will be announced on July 10.
