Page-Burner: An Occasional Guessing Game
October 16, 2007

So I bought seven new hardcovers last Saturday; what of it? I could easily have bought more, but they don't have shopping carts in bookstores, and I was already toting bags from Lush and Nordstrom (what? there were sales... ).

Naturally, I've already plunged in to one of my new books (I had a brief window between deadlines for other reviews and projects), and in order to introduce you to some of the titles out there right now that I love, I'm starting a round of that evergreen Maven game, "Page-Burner." Which of the following books made me late for dinner last night?

Was it Origin by Diana Abu-Jaber, in which a series of crib deaths leads a fingerprint expert to look at the mystery of her own childhood?

Was it Laurie Viera Rigler's Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict?

Or was it Maynard and Jennica, a debut novel by Rudolph Delson?

I also bought the Junot Diaz, but I'm saving that for the weekend... As usual, the first correct guess wins nothing more than my undying admiration. Oh, heck, you can also tell me what to read next... it doesn't even have to be from this list...

I'm hoping it's Maynard and Jennica (based solely on visiting the author's website)...

When I saw the first line of the blog entry "So I bought seven new hardcovers last Saturday" at the PW Daily blog listing, I knew this one was your blog for the day! You book hound. Amy

I guess Origin. I feel like I"ve heard good things about this book. I'm reading One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson and just read The Keep over the weekend and it was STUPENDOUS.

I'm new to your blog but am pretty impressed so far! All the books sound good- but I'm betting on Origin.

Jade, thanks for your kind words... I'm waiting for a few more votes... and Amy, LOL. "It takes one to know one!" However, *this* one is pathetically unrepentant.

Andie, I'm so glad to hear someone else loved 'The Keep.' It got some tepid reviews, and I totally disagree with all of them. Egan's imagination dazzled me sufficiently that I did not care about any inconsistencies.

gotta be confessions of a Jane Austen Addict...too good of a title to pass up. I am a sucker for a good title, too.

BTW... New England Mobile Bookfair in Newton Highlands, MA has shopping carts & the brothers Strymish expect you to fill them! I think they also still have copies of Books in Print nailed to butcher blocks strategically placed in aisles...
