PW First Fiction: A Fresh Crop and a Familiar Face
January 22, 2008
This week's
PW print edition includes
spring debut fiction picks, and editor Michael Coffey reminds us that in fiction, "The author, far above lobbying for the reader to believe something about the real world, is content simply to persuade said reader for a few hours that another place might exist." He says that of the ten debut novels showcased
here that "Four of the 10 authors that follow bring tales from faraway places, and were chosen from among a dozen other strong debuts with an international character or setting. Notable also among many of these books is an apparent return to a brand of fabulism not seen in several decades..."
Fabulism aside, it's fabulous to see a first novel from my PW colleague Jonathan Segura, whose
Occupational Hazards will be out in July from Simon & Schuster. Author's Toughest Challenge? “I was stuck somewhere in like draft eight and couldn't figure out what was missing. And then a friend read it and said I needed a plot. You know: things have to happen."
Congrats, Jonny! Send me a galley?
