A Blog's Life: Mass Marketing
June 19, 2007
I've had a couple of frustrating things happen lately with publicists (none of them my beloveds, and you know who you are!). When online marketing managers have attempted to schedule author interviews, the publicists have either forgotten about the commitments completely or promised times, only to cancel at the last minute.
Things happen, and it's not as if I am blameless in this arena. So all is forgiven.
However, this time the mistake is on the other foot... or something like that (I'm dreadful with the mixed metaphors). When a marketing manager sends out a mass email but attempts to personalize it by including my blog's name, it is important to a) get the blog name right (The Book Maven) and b) if you mistake my name for the blog name, at least spell my name correctly.
On one hand, I'm not likely to forget the thing being promoted in that email any time soon. On the other hand, I'm not likely to promote it.
I didn't bring this up just to whine. Last week I had a long conversation with a colleague about the frustrations bloggers face in the publishing world.
We all know about them, and
we've all talked about them. They exist, and I hope that the more mistakes we
all make, the more we'll learn from them.
As I closed out the marketing email, I vowed to take more care the next time I make a request from a publicist or a marketing manager. Do unto others... Let peace begin with me... I vow to be the change...
Please, stop me. Send me a galley, or a marketing email, or something... I'll respond!
