Shame on the Atlanta Journal Constitution!
April 19, 2007
I was shocked to see the story on PW’s Web site today about the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s elimination of the position of books editor, long held by Teresa Weaver. The paper’s editor says they will continue their book coverage, but without a dedicated editor, it’s hard to imagine how they will maintain the quality Teresa brought to the pages.
I served on the board of the National Book Critics Circle with Teresashe was a dedicated, active board member who spoke up forcefully for the books she believed in and did a fabulous job editing the NBCC’s newsletter.
The decreasing space devoted to book coverage in the nation’s newspapers has been an ongoing source of anger and pain for book critics and publishers everywhere.
You can do something about the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s action. Follow the link to the NBCC blog, where you can find e-mail addresses for the paper’s editor and publisher. Write and tell them how you feel.
