Interviewing Khaled Hosseini in San Jose
March 9, 2007
I'm just back from the west coast on the appropriately named red eye after four days in San Francisco, one of them meeting Khaled Hosseini for a profile article which I'm not going to say too much about because then what would I write for the profile? The night before with David Poindexter of MacAdam Cage with me on my best behavior despite my usual lack of discipline because I had to be uip early the next morning and I take my author interviews very seriously and am always on the look out for the next one which Julie Burton pitched (Gina Nahai whose novel caspian rain is out this fall) at the MacAdam Cage offices (which are very California.. not a cubicle in sight.. there were even windows.. big ones). San Francisco is great although I had some trouble crossing the street because there's a countdown and I was always underestimating how many seconds it would take me to get to the other side. Felt a little like Naples. But back to Hosseni whose new book is coming out in May from Riverhead. Millions of readers are waiting for this book, titled A Thousand Splendid Suns, and none of them will be disappointed. Hosseini invited me to his home for the interview and served wonderfully strong coffee he said his wife calls motor oil, and all I'm going to say is that he's an awfully charming guy: bright, articulate, unassuming and, you heard it here first, this book is going to be a runaway bestseller, which as we all sadly or sometimes gleefully know in publishing, is not always the case with second books. So look for my profile but know that I'm putting my money on A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. It could not have happened to a nicer guy.
