Ruthless Reviewer Responds
February 15, 2008

Well, my fellow ruthless readers have caught me with my pants down. I said I'm not perfect, and I appreciate your comments. Mainly, I'm glad to know people are reading the blog--carefully!

As for why publishers rush galleys out, the galleys we see are not always rushed. If they are, I think there are many reasons--technical, financial and more--that don't have to do with accommodating early reviewers. But publishers themselves could best answer that question.

As to advance galleys being "uncorrected proofs," I mentioned that at the    beginning of my post; it is why I even raised the question of whether it is appropriate to point out errors. I disregard typos and questions of style and grammar. But as I wrote, there is a certain point at which I think it is appropriate to note serious errors of fact.

It is a dilemma, and as someone who has written and edited reviews for 20 years, I am constantly re-evaluating such questions. My posting was as much a question as a criticism: who is responsible?
