I want a new dub
March 22, 2007
My girlfriend Alison works for Food & Wine magazine. We were discussing F&W's audience the other night, using words like "foodies" and "epicureans" -- both of which, I thought, were cool terms. And it occurred to me: why doesn't the book-reading community get a cool nickname like that?
What do we have? Bibliophile. Bookworm. Booknerd. Ugly at best, insulting at worst.
Not to say it's our fault. I blame organized gambling. If it weren't for betting professionals, we'd totally have a claim on "bookies." But of course they'll never give up "bookies" -- the only proper alternative is "betties," and I'm pretty sure that won't go over very well.
So, aside from challenging gambling proponents straight up (not a great idea -- isn't that how the dude in Godfather ends up in bed with a severed horse noggin?) what can us book lovers call ourselves, as a whole, that sounds fresh, catchy and positive? Bookos? Bookoos? Bookaroos? Biblios? Pageturners? Spinecrackers? Readarazzi?
Suggestions welcome ...
