The Frey Effect continues... (with Dog)!
July 17, 2007
A galley recently arrived from a large independent publisher. It's about a lost dog. It has a close-up of a smiling Golden Retriever on the cover, with a man's salt-and-pepper spiked pate thrust at the camera as he puts his ear to the dog's eyebrow. Has a single word title: the dog's name.
Memoir. Marley & Me pie-slicing. Right?
Kind of.
On the back of the book, just above the author bio, is the following sentence:
"Inspired by real events, [the author] has, as he says, 'mainly told the truth in this story of losing my good dog [dog's name here, same name as the book's title].'"
The book is classified near the bottom left as "Hardcover Fiction."
Which parts are we supposed to doubt? Early on the narrator "put the pup down and wrote the check, while Mr. Bennett filled out the AKC forms for his registration." Is the dog's pedigree actually in doubt? Is there even a "Mr. Bennett"?
Very silly. Perhaps, however, the result of not having a giant legal department. Better to be safe than sorry, especially when moving in on a giant blockbuster.
Update:
Puppy Junky, forgive me:
