O'Hagen * Kurt * Lionel * Santlofer
April 17, 2007

I thought I was back from India, having finished The Romantics by Mishra and closing the book with a sigh and suddenly finding myself (isn't that why one goes to India?) up to my third eye in books and book events. I saw Andrew O'Hagen at Housing Works on Crosby Street read from Be Near Me (thanks to his editor and my beloved neighbor Drenka Willen). With O'Hagen's Scottish accent, his dramatic reading, his dark suit and tie, and Drenka's wonderful back story about his spending prize money to take his mother on a trip to New York City where they stayed at the Waldorf Astoria, I was ready to leave India behind and lose myself again. But then Kurt died which reminded me of Catch 22 (I'm sorry.. I did promise to let this one go) and Lionel Shriver got a two book deal from HarperCollins (remember Durga was carrying The Post-Birthday World around Tamil Nadu?) and Jonathan Santlofer had his Barnes & Noble reading for Anatomy of Fear in Chelsea and a party afterwards where they served..... Indian food!

Clearly, it is all about the Indian food, which was delicious, and I'm sorry you missed it.
